Anger is a draining energy and it affects the body physically when held onto. Anger shuts down the bodies acupuncture system and if you live in this state for prolonged periods, it can lead to illness, disease and suffering.
There is an intensity that accompanies anger, and that is why we can fall into its trap. There is a certain juice that comes out of anger that pumps us up in preparation to defend ourselves. When we are angry, we feel something more intense than our average resting mode due to the fight or flight response. The problem with it is that it is rooted in negativity and leads to suffering. We let go of anger for the sake of our well being.
Anger triggers physical symptoms because it’s part of your body’s stress response, also known as the “fight or flight” response. When you get angry, your brain perceives a threat—whether it’s emotional, social, or physical—and it preps your body to either confront or escape that threat.
Here’s how that plays out:
1. Hormones flood your system
- Your amygdala (the brain’s emotional center) signals the hypothalamus, which activates the adrenal glands.
- These glands release adrenaline and cortisol, two stress hormones.
2. Your body gears up
- Heart rate increases – to pump more blood to muscles.
- Blood pressure rises – to push that blood faster.
- Muscles tense – to prep for action.
- Breathing quickens – to increase oxygen supply.
- Pupils dilate – to improve vision.
- You may also get sweaty, feel hot, or have a tight chest or clenched jaw.
3. Digestive changes
Blood flow is diverted away from the stomach and intestines, which can cause:
- Nausea
- Upset stomach
- Loss of appetite
4. Long-term effects (if anger is frequent)
- Chronic headaches
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Weakened immune system
Basically, your body’s reacting to a perceived threat, even if it’s just someone cutting you off in traffic. Anger is useful in short bursts—it helps you stand up for yourself—but over time, it can wear your body down if it’s not managed well.
